Anj Handa | Why Afusat continues to be failed by the asylum process

Anj Handa | Why Afusat continues to be failed by the asylum process

A lot has happened over the last few days: Virgin boss Richard Branson made a public statement about the need to safeguard Afusat and her girls; MPs Nick Clegg, George Mudie, David Hanson and Keith Vaz have all spoken to Theresa May’s deprtment (although she herself remains studiously quiet – meanwhile, her civil servants busy themselves with making life as difficult as possible for us).
Yesterday, I reported that Afusat has a medical examination. As part of this, the doctor asked to do an intimate examination. Thankfully, Afusat declined. There is pre-existing medical evidence of her FGM, this has never been disputed – it was accepted by a judge. Medical records would be available from her GP and the London hospital where she gave birth to Rashidat, who was initially taken from Afusat for fear that she would perform FGM on her. Completely unnecessary and dehumanising. My friend is a graceful, educated woman, not a cat that has been neutered....
